Yufo Temple Jade Buddha Building: Seated Buddha

CHINA, Shanghai; Qing dynasty (1644–1911); White jade; H: 192 cm
The statue was imported from Myanmar in 1882 by the first abbot Huigeng. The Buddha is seated in full lotus position on a double lotus throne with his right hand in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. The figure has a usnisa inlaid with three pearls, while the urna is inlaid with a crystal. Agates are encrusted on the band that are placed along the hairline. Other precious stones adorn the ruffled hem of the monastic robe from shoulder to ankle, as well as the golden band that crosses the chest diagonally and wraps about the right arm. The robe is worn in the Theravada fashion and leaves the right shoulder bare.
