Bodhisattva in Contemplation

PAKISTAN; circa 3rd–4th century; Schist; H: 67 cm; Matsuoka Museum of Art, Tokyo, Japan
This statue possibly represents Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva in contemplation. The Bodhisattva wears a decorated turban with a tuft at the front. The figure has a prominent urna, wide eyes, broad nose, mustache, and full lips. The upper body is adorned with necklaces and a stole, and the lower body is covered in a dhoti. The Bodhisattva seems to be focusing on an object held in the right hand while the left hand holds a lotus. Seated on the throne, the figure has the left foot resting on a pedestal and the right foot placed on the left calf.
