Amitabha Buddha

CHINA; Ming dynasty (1368–1644), dated 1467; Gilt bronze; H: 32 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
The statue has several of the Thirty-Two Marks of Excellence identifying the Buddha, including the long arm that reaches below the knee, a jewel located on top and before the usnisa, an urna now only a circular indentation, and elongated earlobes. The earlobes are hollowed to accept ear pendants. The figure has eyes cast down and the head set on a neck with the three lines of a great person. The monastic robe leaves the right shoulder bare while the hem of the garment decorated with a band of foliated patterns cascades downward in ripples. The figure stands on a double lotus pedestal.
