Mogao Caves: Standing Bodhisattva
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Sui dynasty (581–618); Wood; H: 20 cm; Guimet Museum of Asian Art, Paris, France
Originally discovered in the Mogao Caves, this Bodhisattva stands with hands in anjali (reverence) mudra on a lotus pedestal. The head inclines slightly to one side. Behind the figure is an oval nimbus with lines radiating outwards from the center. The figure wears floral earrings and a long beaded necklace that falls over the elaborately carved lower garment. |
