Western Thousand Buddha Cave 9: Life of the Buddha - Parinirvana

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Dated 1030–1036
This illustration is located on the back (north) wall. The Buddha is depicted reclining on the right side with one leg atop the other. The face is rounded, with partially closed eyes, arched eyebrows, and an urna on the forehead. The eyebrows, mustache, and goatee are painted in mineral green, while the curled hair is painted yellow with a red jewel. The Buddha is surrounded by grieving disciples and devotees with exaggerated facial expressions.
