Kizil Cave 129: Ceiling
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 8th century; Museum of Asian Art, Berlin, Germany
This ceiling medallion in the main chamber is divided into nine triangular banners with Bodhisattvas seated within each. The Bodhisattvas wear jeweled crowns and dhotis, with stoles draped over their bare upper bodies. Their slightly inclined heads all have nimbuses, as they sit on round carpets with legs crossed at the ankles. The Bodhisattvas each play a different musical instrument, including the pipa, flute, drums, and clappers. The figures were outlined in ink and filled with layers of washes in different colors. Removed by a German expedition in the early 20th century, the medallion now belongs to the Museum of Asian art in Berlin. |
