Tongdosa Temple: Standing Buddha

Inscriptions in the lower left and right corners written by the monk Taehwal state that this large image was painted in 1767 by a group of 14 monks including Duhun, Seongjing, and Yeolhaeng. Another inscription dates this work to the ruling periods of Joseon King Yeongjo (reigned 1724-1776) and King Jeongjo (reigned 1776-1800). In 2002, it was listed as Treasure No. 1350.
Clothed in an intricately patterned monastic robe, the Buddha stands on lotus pedestals and holds the stalk of a lotus flower with both hands. His ornate headdress is decorated with small Buddha images and flaming jewels. Patterned clouds surround the green nimbus. The aureole is decorated with symmetrically arranged flowers. The large size of the figure, the harmonious colors, and fine details make this a featured artwork from the Joseon dynasty. |
