Kizil Cave 175: Devadatta and Bodhisattvas Making Offerings

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 6th–7th century
This illustration is located outside a niche on the outer wall of the right corridor. The painting, in combination with the Buddha statue originally housed within the niche, illustrates the story of Devadatta’s attempt to kill the Buddha with a rock. Devadatta is depicted on the right side, facing toward the niche. His eyes are wide open and he appears enraged. His right feet steps upon a boulder and his hands hold up a large rock, as if to throw it at the Buddha. Two Bodhisattvas, on the left, hold lotuses with long stems in offering to the Buddha. The smiling expressions of the Bodhisattvas provide a vivid contrast to Devadatta’s fearsome appearance.
