Yunmenshan Grottoes Niche 2: Attendant Bodhisattva

This niche is located in the southwest area of the grotto site. The main standing Buddha statue has unfortunately been destroyed. Additionally, the faces and hands of the two attendant Bodhisattvas have been badly damaged, but their bodies have been preserved.
The left attendant Bodhisattva depicted here has a round face, wears a headdress, a necklace, various ornaments, and stoles. A patterned sash hangs from the center of the long skirt. Despite the figure being straight, the detailed carving around the chest and slightly distended abdomen lend some measure of dynamism. In addition, the corners of the eyes and mouth highlight the figure 's facial features. This statue is an example of the unique characteristics of the sculptures of the early Sui dynasty (581–618). |
