Mogao Cave 17: Standing Bodhisattva

This well-preserved banner was painted in the 9th century and measures 195 cm in total length. The Bodhisattva has narrowed eyes, a mustache, and hair that hangs down past the shoulders. Fine lines are used to portray the folds in the orange and black monastic robe. The body is covered with a necklace, armlets, bracelets, a headdress with hanging tassels, and a white sash that hangs down below the feet. With hands joined in front of the abdomen, the Bodhisattva stands on a lotus pedestal. There are frills of purple above the feet. A canopy decorated with ornaments hangs above the figure.
Scrolling patterns of red and green flowers are painted on the triangular headpiece. The bottom edge of the banner is decorated with diamond patterns in alternating colors. Vivid blue streamers with tassels are attached to the headpiece. |
