Yungang Grotto 18: Standing Buddhas

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Stone
These standing Buddhas are located on the east and west walls of the grotto, facing inward, towards the large standing Buddha on the back (north) wall. The Buddhas stand on lotus pedestals, while above them are canopies decorated with apsaras and triangular patterns. They have round usnisas and full faces with thin eyebrows, prominent noses, and a slight smile on the lips. The Buddhas wear monastic robes draped across broad shoulders. Both figures have one hand raised to the chest to form a mudra, while the other hangs down at the side. The nimbuses behind the Buddhas consist of three rings decorated with lotus petals, Buddha images, and flames.
