Mirror with Sakyamuni Buddha

This mirror, 15.1 cm in diameter and 1.2 cm thick, was listed as a National Treasure in 1954.
The edge of the mirror has a lotus petal design, and at the top is an image of Sakyamuni Buddha sitting on a lotus throne, flanked by two attendant Bodhisattvas. On either side of these images are falling leaves, and beneath are Manjusri and Samantabhadra Bodhisattvas, riding on a lion and an elephant respectively. Acala and Vaisravana, Heavenly King of the North, stand on a rock before the Buddha.
There is a central boss encircled by two rings of lotus petals on the back of the mirror. Surrounding the boss are flowers and mandarin ducks, and in between the two rings are butterflies, birds, and scroll leaf patterns. |
