Mogao Cave 57: Buddha Teaching the Dharma

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
olored nimbus that contains seven golden Buddha images. Above the Buddha is a canopy fringed with Bodhi leaves. The Buddha is attended on each side by a disciple and five Bodhisattvas. Two small warriors stand in the lower corners. The two Bodhisattvas in the foreground are adorned with ornate headdresses and jewelry accented with gold dust. The style is characteristic of art produced during the transition between the Early Tang (618–712) and High Tang (712–756) periods.
