Fu Father and Son (Active 1126-1155)

CHINA, Sichuan; Song dynasty (960–1279)
Fu Yuanjun and his son, Fu Shineng, were sculptors from Shu (present day Sichuan). They later settled in Changzhou (present day Yongchuan, Chongqing), after which they called themselves the Craftsmen of Changzhou. Sculptures by the Fu's can be seen in the Dazu Rock Carvings. Carved with rigorous skill integrating the artistic features of both southern and northern China, these works exhibit a unique and unrestrained style.
Engraved with their names, their works include the Mahamayuri Bodhisattva in Dazu Rock Carvings Beishan Cave 155 and the depiction of Sizhou Master Sengqie in Dazu Rock Carvings Beishan Cave 177; both images display skillful and concise carving. Illustration of the Sutra on the Descent of Maitreya in Dazu Rock Carvings Beishan Cave 176 features numerous figures with exquisite craftsmanship.
