Ponghaksa Temple Five-Tier Pagoda: Portable Shrine with Buddha Triad
SOUTH KOREA, North Chungcheong, Goesan; Goryeo dynasty (918–1392); Bronze; H: 3.4 cm; Cheongju National Museum, South Korea
This portable shrine was found in 1967 in the second tier of the collapsed five-tier pagoda at Ponghaksa Temple, along with an ink inscription which recorded the reconstruction of the pagoda in 1483.
The rectangular shrine stands on a simple lotus platform, with a Buddha and two Bodhisattvas enshrined within. They have high topknots, but their postures and mudras are indistinct. There are various patterns behind the three figures. |
