Wat Ratburana: Disciples

THAILAND, Ayutthaya; Ayutthaya Kingdom (circa 1350–1767), dated 1424
Images of 20 disciples are painted in the middle register on each of the four walls in the lower chamber of the Wat Ratburana underground palace. All 80 figures have a similar appearance; they wear red monastic robes and stand with their palms joined in reverence. Their faces and bodies are gilded, and they have black hair. Though the facial features are faded, the colors are still bright. The golden skin suggests that these figures may be Arhats, not mere disciples.
