Sejung Monastery: Seated Buddha

CHINA, Tibet, Qamdo; 14th–17th century; Gilt copper alloy; H: 38.5 cm
The Buddha has tightly curled hair, with a topknot above the wide forehead. The alert face is wide and has a square chin. The figure wears a monastic robe that leaves the right shoulder bare and has a distinct patched pattern. The garment clings to the body and reveals a broad chest and a slim waist. The Buddha sits in the full lotus position on a double lotus throne, and the right hand is in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. A vajra rests horizontally near the crossed ankles.
