CHINA; Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279)
Shiliang Yizhong was a calligrapher and monk from the Yangqi branch of the Linji school of Chan Buddhism. He assumed the Dharma teachings of Chan Master Wuzhun Shifan and resided at Shishuangshan in Hunan. His calligraphy displays a rich range of strokes including thin, bold, cursive, and free flowing. His works exemplified the elegant and artistic characteristics of a Chan monk. Shiliang's piece, Seven-Character Poem, is currently kept at the Tokiwayama Bunko Foundation in Kamakura, Japan.
