Tianfeng Pagoda: Pavilion with Buddha Figurine
CHINA, Zhejiang, Ningbo; Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279); Silver and gold; H: 8 cm; Tianyige Museum, Ningbo, Zhejiang, China
Recovered from the underground palace of Tianfeng Pagoda in 1982, this pavilion is made of silver but has a wooden look. The high base has a number of tiers and is supported by feet in the shape of clouds. The hip roof is sustained by two columns between which there is an ogee arch in openwork.
A gold Buddha figurine measuring 2.8 cm stands barefoot on a lotus pedestal beneath the arch. The Buddha has a high topknot and wears a robe covering both shoulders. His hands come together at his chest, and behind is the outline of a nimbus and a mandorla. |
