Mogao Cave 17: Standing Bodhisattva

This banner was painted in the second half of the 9th century. The Bodhisattva stands barefooted upon a lotus pedestal, holding a wish-fulfilling jewel in the right hand. The headdress is decorated with lotus flowers and a white ribbon that hangs down in front of the chest. String ornaments, a necklace, and bracelets adorn the body. The colors of the stoles and robe match those of the nimbus and lotus throne. An intricate circular canopy hangs at the top of the image. The rounded face of the Bodhisattva and the washes of color are characteristic of Tang dynasty art. |
