Badulla: Seated Buddha

This bronze statue was unearthed at Badulla in Uva. The Buddha is seated in the half lotus position with both hands raised; one hand forms the vitarka (teaching) mudra, and the other hand holds a corner of the robe as well as a lotus. Small, tight curls cover the head as well as the usnisa. The nose is especially straight, with only the barest incised lines indicating the eyebrows and the shape of the eyes. The lips are full and the earlobes elongated. The Buddha wears a thin monastic robe that clings to the body and covers the left shoulder. Straight, uniform lines indicate the folds of the robe. |
