Feilai Peak Caves Niche 32: Vajrapani Bodhisattva

CHINA, Zhejiang, Hangzhou; Yuan dynasty (1271–1368), dated 1292; Stone; H: 1.6 m
Located at the northernmost and of the cave site, an inscription on the right of the niche identifies the carving’s sponsors and creation date. It was commissioned by the wife of an official, Toqto’a, in 1292.
Vajrapani wears a headdress featuring a Buddha image, earrings, garland, necklace, stole, and short dhoti. The Bodhisattva has a round face, protruding eyes, and a short, robust physique. One hand holds a vajra, while the other forms a mudra in front of the chest. Vajrapani stands in the warrior stance, a squatted position with one leg bent and the other stretched out to the side.
