Embroidery of Maitreya Buddha

Embroidery of Maitreya Buddha

CHINA; Ming dynasty (1368–1644); By Han Ximeng; Hanging scroll; Silk; 54.5 x 26.7 cm; Liaoning Provincial Museum, Shenyang, China
This embroidery was created by Han Ximeng in Gu style during the late Ming dynasty (1368-1644).
Maitreya Buddha is shown sitting in royal ease on a round prayer mat. He has a round face with laugh lines which emphasize his peaceful, smiling face. He wears a robe made of hundreds of patches and a dhoti beneath his bulging stomach. In his right hand he holds prayer beads and his left hand holds a sack. An inscription on the top of the painting is written by Dong Qichang, a renowned artist.
This embroidery uses a range of stitching techniques, mainly with double yarn. The patched robe is created with several stitching techniques creating a matte effect which looks soft and gentle.
