Toji Temple: Box for Robe of Master Huiguo

This wooden box was made during the 10th century and was used to store Master Huiguo's robe, which was brought from China to Japan by Master Kukai. It was listed as a National Treasure in 1953.
The rectangular wooden box is 47.8 cm long, 39 cm wide, and 11.5 cm high. It is lacquered in black and decorated with fish, birds, and turtles among waves. The maki-e decoration was achieved by using gold and silver powder.
The sea wave motif was popular during the Heian period; here, it represents the voyage undertaken by Kukai to bring the teachings of Vajrayana Buddhism to Japan. |
