Figurine of Bodhidharma
JAPAN; Edo period (1615–1868); By Kitao Shigemasa; Ivory; H: 5 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
This ivory figurine was created by Japanese artist Kitao Shigemasa. Because it has an ivory extension, it is thought that this figurine might have formed the knob at the end of a staff.
Bodhidharma is depicted surrounded by a whirling effect. He has thick eyebrows, sunken eyes, a bulbous nose, and is frowning. His entire body is covered in a cloak with a series of curved folds radiating out from the head. |
