CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
This Early Tang (618-712) image is located below the niche on the back (west) wall. An inscription on the left side identifies the figure as the Trailokya Vikramin (Transcend Three Realms) Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva’s head is tilted to one side and the eyes are focused on a lotus flower which is held in the right hand; the left hand holds a plate. A long stole is draped across the torso and the right arm. The figure wears necklaces, armlets, and bracelets, and a colorful lower garment is tied at the waist.
