Bezeklik Caves: Bodhisattvas
CHINA, Xinjiang, Turpan; Tang dynasty (618-907); Ink and color on paper; H: 12 cm; Turpan Administration of Cultural Heritage, Xinjiang, China
These fragments depict three Bodhisattvas standing with their heads partially turned to the side. Parts of their nimbuses, painted with rings of color, are still visible. One of the Bodhisattvas wears a blue robe that covers both shoulders and has long hair that hangs down to the upper arm. On the other fragment, the rounded face and gold headdress of one Bodhisattva can be seen, and the other figure is almost completely obscured by damage. |
