Leifeng Pagoda: Figurine of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Zhejiang, Hangzhou; Five Dynasties (907–960); Jade; H: 4 cm; Zhejiang Provincial Museum, Hangzhou, China
This figurine was recovered from the underground palace of Leifeng Pagoda in 2001. It is made of white jade and is 4 cm high, 2.1 cm wide, and 0.4 cm thick. Avalokitesvara has a tall headdress and the face is round, with long eyebrows and small eyes. The Bodhisattva is wearing a robe with crossover collars and loose sleeves. The left elbow is bent and the hand is held up holding an object; the right hand is placed on the upper torso. Avalokitesvara sits in lotus posture on a lotus throne. The figurine is engraved on both sides. Below the lotus throne there is an extension, which suggests that this figurine was inserted into a larger work of art.
