Borobudur: Prince Sudana Jataka

INDONESIA, Central Java, Magelang; circa 8th–9th century; Andesite
The 20 reliefs on the lower section of the first square terrace depict the Prince Sudana Jataka from the Divyavadana. This carving shows Relief No. 16, which depicts Prince Sudana searching for his wife, Princess Manohara. The prince, in the midst of the search, encounters several kinnaris who are drawing water from a river so the princess can wash. The prince uses this opportunity to put his ring into the vessel, hoping the princess will discover it. The prince is seated on the right, in the act of dropping the ring into the water vessel, while one of the kinnaris looks on. Three other kinnaris on the left are carrying water back to the princess.
