Mogao Cave 148: Manjusri Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
This image is painted on the left side of the south wall within the main chamber. Manjusri Bodhisattva sits in half lotus position on the back of a fierce green lion. The Bodhisattva wears a large crown, necklaces, bracelets, and other ornaments. Beams of colorful light radiate from the intricately patterned nimbus and aureole. The wide-eyed lion opens its mouth, appearing to roar. Lotuses bloom beneath its feet. Two attendants stand before the lion, one holding a leash that is wrapped around the beast’s neck, and the other turning to gaze reverently at the Bodhisattva.
