Kizil Cave 135: Ceiling

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 8th century
This medallion is painted on the ceiling of the main chamber of Cave 135, which is located in the inner valley. Only half of the ceiling has survived. The medallion is divided into several alternating red and white segments with a heavenly being depicted on each. Currently, only eight of these segments remain. The heavenly beings, standing upon round rugs, wear headdresses, jewels, and long lower garments. Some play musical instruments while others grasp their stoles or hold vases. The medallion is delicately embellished with red, green, white, and black patterns.
