Ganu (Active 1551-1575)

INDIA, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh
Ganu was a painter from the Ladakh region of northern India. According to the inscription on the mural in the main hall of Phyang Monastery, the images on the left side of the south wall were painted by Ganu. These include depictions of Choje Denma Kunga Drakpa, founder of the monastery, and Rinchen Namgyal, the 18th head of the Drikung Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.
Although there is no record of Ganu's life events, the inscription of his name on the mural suggests he was a prominent Buddhist artist of his time.
