Huayan Upper Temple Great Hero Hall: Attendant Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Ming dynasty (1368–1644); Clay; H: 3.6 m
The statue is located on the right side of Vairocana Buddha in the Great Hero Hall. The Bodhisattva stands upon a lotus pedestal with the right hand raised in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra and the left hand extended in varada (wish-granting) mudra. A coronet that appears to be surmounted by a cross is worn by the figure and obscures the topknot that is behind it. Locks of hair fall down past the ears. The figure’s garments are colorfully painted with long sleeves pulled back at the elbows. A stole winds around the arms to fall below the lotus pedestal. The skirt is turned down and secured by a studded belt.
