Maijishan Grotto 5: Western Pure Land

CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui; Tang dynasty (618–907); 2.25 x 4.5 m
This mural, located in the upper left section of the facade, is in excellent condition. Depicted in the middle of a large pavilion, Amitabha Buddha is seated in full lotus position on a Sumeru throne. Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattvas flank Amitabha. On the sides, there are several additional Bodhisattvas on platforms. In front of the pavilion, a bridge spans the large pond of seven treasures. The bridge links this pavilion with a second pavilion. A large number of Bodhisattvas gather around the pavilion and listen to the Dharma.
