Mogao Cave 17: Medicine Buddha

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907);65.5 x 29 cm; Guimet Museum of Asian Art, Paris, France
Although this late 9th century painting has been severely damaged, it is highly valued for the floral motifs printed on the silk using an ancient dyeing method. The Medicine Buddha has a round face topped with a flat usnisa. A bright red robe is draped over the left shoulder, and a staff is held in the right hand. The forehead, the area below the eyes, the neck, and the palms are embellished with a faint red wash.
