Medicine Buddha Triad

This painting is one of the many Buddhist artworks commissioned by Queen Munjeong and dedicated to her son King Myeongjong (reigned 1546-1567). Medicine Buddha sits on a lotus throne atop a tall Sumeru base. The Buddha has a usnisa topped with a jewel, long ears, a nimbus, and an aureole. Suryaprabha and Candraprabha Bodhisattvas, wearing decorative robes, stand below the throne joining their palms in reverence. Their headdresses are topped with discs respectively containing a golden bird, a representation of the sun, and a jade hare, representing the moon. |
