Mogao Cave 17: Standing Bodhisattva

This well-preserved, colorful artwork dates from the 9th century. The barefooted Bodhisattva stands on a lotus pedestal and holds both hands in the dhyani (meditation) mudra in front of the stomach. Downcast eyes and pursed lips give the Bodhisattva a calm, contemplative appearance. The golden headdress is decorated with lotus flowers and hanging tassels. A red shawl covered with floral patterns is draped over the shoulders and hangs down to the feet. String ornaments, bracelets, and a necklace adorn the body. An ornate canopy hangs above the colorful nimbus. Floral patterns run across the top of the image, and latticed patterns are painted at the bottom. The skillfully painted details and vivid washes of color make this an outstanding artwork. |
