Mogao Cave 302: King Sibi Jataka

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Sui dynasty (581–618)
This painting is located on the east slope of the gabled ceiling. The story derives from the Mahaprajnaparamita Sastra and is represented in a single scene. The image is the seventh in a series of such panel images representing the Jatakas. King Sibi is seated atop a lotus throne while a person carefully cuts his flesh with a knife. Another man holds a scale and watches in horror.
