Kizil Cave 188: Bodhisattva Making an Offering

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 7th century
Cave 118 is situated in the east valley, with this painting found on the back wall of the main chamber, below the second standing Buddha on the right side. Adorned with jewelry and a floral headdress, the Bodhisattva wears a green dhoti and a white stole which hangs to the ground. The figure kneels before the Buddha and gazes up at him. An object is held in the left hand in offering while the right hand touches the Buddha’s feet. The posture of the Bodhisattva is graceful and vivid, and the lines of the garments are gently flowing.
