Figure Making an Offering

MYANMAR; Late 19th century; Marble; H: 54.6 cm; Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, California, USA
This unusual standing figure is painted a vibrant color, coated with a layer of varnish and decorated with glass beads. The varied series of hollows descending the sides gives the figure added interest.
The devotee depicted here wears a cone-shaped headdress as well as ear pendants and a necklace. He is dressed in a robe decorated with patterned dots that is overhung by the loop of the stole. The ends of the stole hang down the back and wind over the arms; lower down they have been damaged and therefore are indistinct. A wide ornamented sash falls down the center of the robe. The sides of the garment are raised, forming wing-like patterns. The offering is held at the waist with both hands.
