Yungang Grotto 7: Heavenly Beings Making Offerings

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Northern Wei dynasty (386–534); Stone
Located above the arched doorway in the south wall of the rear chamber, these heavenly beings are depicted kneeling in a variety of postures within a shallow, rectangular niche. Their hands either form mudras or have palms joined in reverence. Each figure has hair tied in a topknot, delicate facial features, and a gentle smile. Round nimbuses are carved behind their heads. The heavenly beings wear necklaces, bracelets, long garments, and stoles draped over their shoulders. The graceful, elegant appearance of these figures has led locals to refer them as the Six Beauties. ""
