Horo Shan: Assemblies of Buddhas

This piece of a beam was discovered at the site of Horo Shan. The upper section of the fragment is ornamented with a gilded cruciform pattern. Below, there are two images of the Buddha surrounded by disciples. Though many of the details have worn away, the gold robes, nimbuses, and aureoles of the Buddhas are still visible. The two images are separated by a diamond pattern. Below, there are two sculpted lions and empty spaces indicating that the lower section of the beam was once decorated with a row of these small creatures. The lions are carefully carved with an open mouth, flowing mane, and overlapping feet. Although the fragment is damaged, it still displays skillful craftsmanship. |
