Wat Kompong Luong: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

The statue was discovered at Wat Kompong Luong and depicts a Bodhisattva wearing a cylindrical crown fronted by a meditating Buddha, identifying it as Avalokitesvara. The figure is Mahayana, indicating that it was from an earlier period before the region came under Theravadian influence. Both the style of crown and the way the belted lower garment is worn are similar to early statues from the Champa Kingdom (circa 7th century–1382).
The statue is coarsely made, the thin body leaning slightly to one side and stands with legs apart. The right hand is raised to chest level while the left hand holds an object that is very likely a lotus bud. |
