Potala Palace: Tara
CHINA, Tibet, Lhasa; 13th–14th century;Copper alloy; 828H: 45 cm
This elegant Tara stands in an understated tribhanga posture. The high center of her five-leaf crown is echoed by the jeweled apex of the flame-patterned nimbus behind the head. The bare upper body has full breasts and a slim waist, below which is a long belted skirt. The gathered end of a stole hangs by the side of the left leg. The raised left hand carries a blossoming lotus and the right holds a wish-fulfilling gem between finger and thumb. Tara stands on a double lotus pedestal. |
