Pasho Monastery: Padmapani Avalokitesvara
CHINA, Tibet, Qamdo; 11th–12th century; Brass; H: 19 cm
Padmapani (lotus-bearer) is an iconographic form of Avalokitesvara. The Bodhisattva stands on a lotus pedestal surrounded by an arched mandorla decorated with flames and topped by a canopy with a jeweled finial. The Bodhisattva wears various ornaments and a dhoti, and adopts the tribhanga posture. The lowered right hand is in varada (wish-granting) mudra and the left hand holds a long-stalked lotus. The attendants are smaller and stand to either side. The one on the right side has four arms while the other figure displays the varada mudra. There is a bird-headed figure kneeling in reverence by the foot of the base. |
