Maijishan Niche 37: Attendant Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Tianshui; Sui dynasty (581–618); Clay; H: 1.86 m
This Bodhisattva statue, located at the back wall, to the left of the Buddha, is representative of the elegant art of the Sui dynasty (581–618). The Bodhisattva has a topknot and a headdress with ribbons that drape onto the shoulders. Embellished with ornaments, the Bodhisattva’s fitted robe hangs loosely and naturally. The hands of the Bodhisattva are crossed gently on the chest. With bare feet, the Bodhisattva stands in a soft and simple pose on a round lotus pedestal.
