Duldur-Aqur: Head of a Monk
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; 7th–8th century; Clay; H: 32 cm; Guimet Museum of Asian Art, Paris, France
The head was unearthed from the Buddhist ruins of Duldur-Aqur in 1907. The head of this figure is egg-shaped. The line of the eyebrows and nose are artificially produced with features, including the pupils and the outline of the lips, painted on to give better definition. The ears are elongated and lie flat against the head. |
