Dzogang Monastery: Amitayus Buddha

CHINA, Tibet, Qamdo; 15th–16th century; Gilt copper alloy; H: 22.4 cm
The statue was probably created during the 15th or 16th century. Amitayus wears a high crown that encircles a topknot rising to a crest jewel. The broad-browed, smiling face is adorned with large earrings; the left earring is lost. Other pieces of jewelry adorning the body are inlaid with turquoise. The armlets positioned near the elbows are an aspect in later Tibetan sculptures. The figure sits in the full lotus position upon a double lotus throne, with hands supporting a vase.
