Ongniud Banner Liao Tomb: Apsara

CHINA, Inner Mongolia, Ongniud Banner; Liao dynasty (907–1125); Jade; L: 5.2 cm; Chifeng City Museum, Inner Mongolia, China
This jade figure was excavated from a Liao dynasty tomb in 1970. The apsara has an ornate headdress and wears a short garment on her upper body. Her hands are placed in front of her chest with palms joined. She wears a skirt and has one leg bent and the other leg extended. A silk stole is draped from her neck, wrapped around both arms and flutters behind her. The apsara is carried along on a floating cloud.
The white jade has been meticulously carved and the artist has been able to produce a dynamic effect in such a simple work of art.
