Incense Burner

CHINA; Qing dynasty (1644–1911); Gilt copper alloy; H: 23.7 cm; National Palace Museum, Taipei, Taiwan
This incense burner is made of gilt copper alloy inlaid with red, white, blue, and green semi-precious stones. It is in the form of a mythical creature with a fierce expression, bulging eyes, and its mouth is wide open revealing its fangs. The beast has a large round body and stands firmly on its paws with prominent claws consisting of white stones. It has two S-shape wings and a crest along its back. There is an opening at the top of the horn which allows the smoke to disperse.
